the laser teeth whitening is pretty much the same.
the trays use peroxide solution, but they aren't as effective since they don't react with any light to make them bleach more.
and the treatment is never a one time thing, your teeth got stained before, and they always will.
but with a treatment and check up appointments 1- 2 times every 6mths after that you can maintain the whiteness.

keep in mind the treatments will not make your teeth white, but as white as they can go.
the whiteness depends on your enamel, the covering of your actual teeth.
if your enamel is worn off, your real teeth are exposed, and those are yellow.
References :
learn about teeth bleaching
