What qualification and training must a person have in order to make dentures?
Published: March 26th, 2009
How are dentures made and how long is the training?
In Canada and in the U.S. the only people who can make dentures are dentists and denturologists.
A dentist has to go through many year of university studies, and can do most dental treatments as well.
A denturologist has less studying to do, and is concentrated on dentures, partials, sometimes dentures over implants.
A dental laboratory can make dentures, but cannot take impressions from patients.

I am a dentist and I have never heard of a "denturologist". Maybe those are only found in Canada. If someone in the US says they are a "denturologist", RUN AWAY!
A dentist can make dentures. A dentist who goes for advanced training in replacing teeth is called a prosthodontist.
Dentures are made in a varying number of steps. Some places say they can make them in 24 hours by combining steps. Dentures I make take 4-5 steps and I work with a laboratory to do some of the work.

In Washington State, a licensed "denturist" can make dentures, as well as a dentist.
In most cases, a dentist will see the patient to screen for bone loss or oral cancer, then refer the patient to a denturist for impressions and fabrication of the dentures.
In my particular office, the denturist visits patients right here. The dentist is involved in the treatment, but the denturist does the actual formation of the denture. It costs the patient far less than if the dentist made them, and most denturists are far more experienced in making appliances than dentists.
Because they are licensed by the state, they are regulated and reviewed to make sure they are qualified. It seems to be working out well here, and I think the licensing of denturists is about 4 years old.
