An oral surgeon goes through dental school to obtain his DDS degree but then takes post graduate residency training for 3 years to specialize in his field. He will end up doing no fillings, cosmetic dentistry, braces, and treating gum disease. He will limit his practice to surgical procedures of the mouth and facial area.
References :
A dentist

An oral surgeon can do more than a dentist. While dentists do the 'check up' and 'teeth pulls' aspect of oral care, oral surgeons do procedures that require anesthesia where dentists use lighter forms such as numbing and their procedures aren't as risky. It's all based on schooling and training.
