Does anyone have any experience with a child with infant caries?

By: admin
Published: October 2nd, 2009

My daughter is 11 mos. old and has developed dental caries(cavities). She is our sixth child and none of our other children have required any dental tratment(other than cleanings every six mos.) and I am very concerned. I exclusively breastfed for the first 6 mos. I always wiped her mouth with a clean cloth after eating, and as she got older, brushed her teeth twice a day and offered sippy of water after eating. She still nurses and she also eats regular meals. Juice is given once a day in a sippy(at snack time) and the rest is breastmilk(nursing) or water(sippy). She goes to the dentist Monday for treatment, and I was wondering if anyone has any experience or info to share. Thank You

Thanks so much

For 10 I am not sure either I would go with 12 or 24 though. Probably 12 because I think that it’s 24-48 when calculus begins.

I think the answer for 12 might be wrong Digestion is the chemical process of breaking down food, chewing or mastication is the physical breakdown. The word stomach being there confuses me, it’s a poorly worded question.

13 is A. basal metabolic rate

Everything else looks right.

What are dental caries?

What is the scientific definition and a brief description of dental caries?

Help w/ 102 homework!

Thank You! :)
Dental caries, also known as tooth decay or cavity, is a disease wherein bacterial processes damage hard tooth structure (enamel, dentin and cementum). These tissues progressively break down, producing dental cavities (holes in the teeth). Two groups of bacteria are responsible for initiating caries: Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacilli. If left untreated, the disease can lead to pain, tooth loss, infection, and, in severe cases, death. Today, caries remains one of the most common diseases throughout the world.

Brushing my teeth can prevent the spreading of my dental caries ?

No, it does not. In fact the mechanical motion of brushing will help loosen plaque and lower the risk of dental caries. (Use fluoridated toothpaste!) You should brush at least twice a day and after every meal.

Can one get dental caries because of french-kissing?

By: admin
Published: September 4th, 2009

I’ve never had problems with my teeth, but i think that my lover has dental caries and I fear I’m going to catch it from him. Is this likely?
He’s also a smoker, if that fact means anything?

No, even though caries is an infection of the tooth with bacteria, and they can spread to another tooth, you will not get caries from french kissing. The human mouth contains a natural flora of bacteria that keeps other "bad" bacteria at bay, so there is kind of "no room" for those other bacteria to invade. The bacteria grow on plaque and calculus of the teeth, and break down sugars and carbohydrates to lactic acid, which breaks down enamel, which is what causes caries. That’s why it is important to brush and floss regularly. If you don’t floss, it’s like only brushing some of your teeth.

A question for all dental professionals?

By: admin
Published: August 14th, 2009

Would you think that the use of dental bleaching trays at night might help to retain "some" of the moisture on the teeth, or enough to be of help, aiding in the reduction of dental caries associated with patients who suffer with dry mouth due to medical conditions or medications they take? I’m curious as to the response I’ll get with this question, thank you all in advance!
I’m just asking for thoughts on this, any suggestions to a revised stint, or any comments. So tell me if you think this concept could be of any help, and any type of solutions that might be of use if this could possibly be of any help with the effects of dry mouth in regard to dental caries. Dr. Sam, I would appreciate your opinion on this. I look forward to reading any remarks given.
What about any patients who may have reported increased saliva production when wearing mouth guards or bleaching stints? I have not read any articles or reports to confirm this might be of help. I’m in a debate over this, and I don’t like to lose, especially when I think I’m right. Although, I may have missed something, but I have no knowledge of any studies made or any dental reports on it?
Yes, I would also think so.
I would also think that the use of "trays" without any solutions, would cause dry mouth to be possibly even more severe.

I agree with toothdoc. Ideas of things you could do to help would be to brush more often with soft bristle brush and a sensitive toothpaste (like sensodyne), and use a topical fluoride at home (dentists can prescribe these to patients). There are saliva substitutes that can be used, the only one I can think of off the top of my head is Salivart. It is difficult to duplicate saliva and it is probably something that people wouldn’t even think could be a big deal.

I wish you (or the person with this condition) the best.

Major dental caries a problem - what to do?

What steps can be done to reverse or halt tooth decay? Also how far gone must a tooth be for it to make extraction inevitable.

Personally, I’ve had an exceptionally high rate of tooth decay all of my life (I’m in my 60’s). Here’s what I’ve learned:

1. Find a dentist who has recently graduated and set up her practice. Find someone who is "idealistic" and enthusiastic/fanatical about stopping the decay process.

2. The dentist will have to remove ALL of the decay. This may mean gum surgery, if the decay has progressed below the gum-line. Painful and expensive, but necessary. Any small areas of decay progress rapidly, so cleaning out all of this decay is essential.

3. Schedule teeth cleaning + exams every 3 months. Insist that the hygienist explain in detail how to clean every surface of your teeth, after every meal. This means: brushing, flossing, and (often) using an "inter-dental" brush to get between the teeth, at the gum-line.

4. The insurance won’t pay the hygienist to do this necessary "training", so I simply pay out-of-pocket.

5. I also consult with my oral surgeon about how to clean my teeth. He’s passionate about cleanliness.

6. Think of the hygienist, oral surgeon, etc. as "Personal Trainers" for your teeth. Personally, I tend to get lazy in cleaning my teeth, and I need a Personal Trainer to keep me focused.

7. Get a 1% topical fluoride solution, and add drops to your drinking water. Get from your dentist a PRESCRIPTION 1% topical fluoride toothpaste. This increases the hardness of your tooth enamel.

8. Personally, during my lifetime, I’ve gone from multi-surface fillings to crowns on most teeth, and recently gum surgery & a complete second set of crowns. A little expensive, but still fully functional.

Do ladies or men get more dental cavities (caries)?

By: admin
Published: July 31st, 2009

I would imagine (and this is a completely non-medical opinion!) that men get more cavities.

I think women are more likely to brush and floss their teeth frequently, and go for regular dental check ups. Women are usually more health conscious, and eat less sugary food due to dieting/watching their weight.
