Cheap Alternative Teeth Whitening Treatments

By: admin
Published: April 7th, 2009

Until just recently those with little or no money available for tooth whitening treatments at a dentists’ office had no other choice but to accept the yellow and brown discoloration of their teeth; discoloration caused by their diet, smoking habits, use of antibiotics, and even their age. But in this day and age, for a price of around $30 or less, these same people can also have a white smile similar to one they would receive from a visit to the dentist.

However, there is still one challenge, one hurdle if you will, that must be overcome before that bright smile can be had, and that is deciding on what sort of treatment to buy.

Whitening Toothpastes

The difference between tooth whitening toothpastes and regular toothpastes is that the former contain polishing agents which are specially engineered to remove deep staining from teeth. However, though they are a convenient way of obtaining a whiter smile, they do not work as quickly, and they are also not as effective as the other option that is available on the market - tooth whitening systems.

Tooth Whitening Systems

Tooth whitening systems are similar to what is commonly used by dentists in their offices. Thanks to products such as Zoom and Britesmile though, dentists no longer hold a monopoly on tooth whitening treatments. Though these at-home systems are not as potent as those used in dentist offices, they are still very effective, and you will more than likely have a difficult time seeing a difference.

In general, most tooth whitening systems contain similar components, regardless of the manufacturer. Most contain a whitening gel, as well as a mouth tray. The composition of the gel might change a little from one brand to the next, but the main ingredient in them all is either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide.

Tooth whitening systems are used by applying the gel to the mouth tray and inserting the tray into your mouth for a period of time, which will vary from one brand to the next. That’s it. Seems too good to be true right? Well, it really isn’t. Tooth whitening is no more involved than that, which I’m sure makes you wonder why people are still willing to pay a dentist hundreds of dollars for a service they can do themselves, right?

Since most whitening toothpastes and whitening systems are essentially the same, what will most likely settle your decision will be price or name brand. This will have to be a decision you make for yourself based on your own financial and personal needs. Whichever you choose, feel comfortable knowing that your decision to whiten your teeth is a good one, one free from the worry of harmful side effects (a rarity in the medical and dental fields today).

Having a beautiful smile is a great feeling. If you have yellowish or brown discoloration on your teeth, then take advantage of the affordable tooth whitening technology available.

Teeth Whitening 101

By: admin
Published: April 3rd, 2009

In this day and age, having the brightest, whitest teeth possible has become commonplace. The tooth whitening industry has quickly become a multi million dollar business, with companies vying to compete by introducing new products designed to give consumers the whitest smile in the shortest amount of time. Crest, Colgate, Rembrandt and other name brand companies have all created products that reportedly whiten your smile and give you those pearly whites you’ve always desired. However, while whitening products may seem like a quick fix for teeth that are less than picture perfect, it’s important to know how to prevent stains from even forming on your teeth to begin with.

Coffee, dark colas, red wine and tea drinkers should all take note that these beverages are heavy hitters when it comes to tooth stains. Certain compounds in these drinks work to create stains on your pearly whites, making them yellow and dull. Cigarette smoking also contributes to staining, and those who smoke should seriously consider quitting to prolong the beauty of their teeth. Even the strongest whitening products don’t entirely cover up stains from cigarettes and can leave you with less than stellar results. It’s also important to remember to check the ingredients for each product you’re considering to make sure the product is safe.

For people with stains that simple drugstore products cannot help, there are several dental procedures that can brighten your smile drastically, and increase the whiteness of your teeth – for a price. Those with moderate or severe stains are advised to consult with their dentist about a course of treatment that will work for them. From chair-side bleaching to special trays customized to fit your mouth with a bleaching gel, these dental procedures cost a lot more than typical drugstore products, but will allow you to obtain much better results.

Regardless of your teeth whitening needs, there’s a product or procedure that will more than likely work for you. However, to truly reap the benefits of your newly whitened smile it’s important to eliminate or significantly reduce your contact with stain inducing habits, foods and beverages. Proper dental care is also essential to maintaining a beautiful, healthy smile. If you desire a picture perfect smile, whitening products can help but only if you are committed to the upkeep required to maintain your pearly whites for years to come.

With teeth whitening becoming more popular as Hollywood influences more younger people to look like celebrities it is inevitable the market for whitening products will only grow in the near future.

Facts About Bad Breath

By: admin
Published: April 3rd, 2009

It is always a good idea to consult your doctor if you have any persistent medical or health problem, even something as trivial as bad breath. It helps if you can follow some tips for maintaining general hygiene to see if the problem cannot be cured without a prescription.

Bad breath is mostly a result of bacterial grows in the mouth. There are certain bacteria that grown in dry places. So a dry mouth due to reduced saliva increases saliva growth. Low saliva also means that food is not rinsed out of the mouth.

The production can be affected by various factors. There are some very simple causes related to the environment (the mouth goes dry when we sleep that is why the smell is no powerful in the morning), and more complex reasons like disease and diet. Secretion of saliva reduces with increasing age. Dehydration that can result from heat or alcohol consumption is also a contributing factor. Snoring can also result in dry a mouth giving rise to morning-breath-syndrome.

There are some diseases than can cause, or worsen, a bad breath problem. Most of these diseases come in the form in infections in the respiratory tract.

There are many over the counter and prescription drugs that also cause dehydration or specifically dryness in the mouth and throat. Antihistamines that are taken for relief from allergies usually have this side effect. Other medications include high blood pressure and therapeutic drugs for depression and similar problems. Alcoholic beverages as well as mouthwashes containing alcohol are also suspect in this regard. Most people do not pay attention to alcohol in mouthwashes, assuming this is good, but it is actually bad.

Cigarette (or other forms of tobacco) smoking is another reason for dryness of mouth. Smoking also causes several oral side effects. The precise cause of this is unknown but it is well known that smoking can indirectly result in promoting bad breath. If you have a natural bad breath problem then you can fully expect smoking to magnify the situation.

Though the body’s immune system is good at fighting off various infections it is practically powerless against bacterial infections that lead to problems like bad breath. This happens because the bacteria are anaerobic (without oxygen) meaning a lack of oxygen is needed for them to thrive. The function of saliva is to circulate oxygen on the surface of the the mouth, tongue, gums, and throat. When there is no saliva, and hence no oxygen, the bacteria begin to multiply creating sulfurous compounds such as hydrogen sulfide (the same chemical responsible for the smell of rotten eggs).

What will my dentist do if I have impacted wisdom teeth and no dental coverage till next year?

By: admin
Published: April 2nd, 2009

I am in a lot of pain. One of my impacted wisdom teeth is trying to erupt. My dental insurance will not cover anything until May of next year.

I am having a sharp, shooting pain in my head and ear- it has been going on for days and is hardly tolerable.

Is there ANYTHING the dentist can do to help me? I am pretty much broke so I can't pay on my own- but I don't think I can wait until May for help with this issue.

It looks like you are pretty stuck. They can not do work and not be paid. They won't do work and bill later with a different date beucase that is considered insurance fraud. You might have to find out if they will let you do a pyamnet plan, or go an apply for credit thourgh their office for a dental credit card. Wisdom teeth are painful and can cause pressure and pain that hurts your mouth, your ears and your sinuses. Everything is close together and connected. I am sorry you hurt so much. Try some Tylenol and warm compresses for now and swich with some warm salt water when you think of it as well. I know how you feel, I have been in the same situation! I hope all goes well for you!

What food caries a good source Of Iron?

By: admin
Published: April 2nd, 2009

Animal sources of iron include red meat, especially liver, eggs, and seafood such as tuna, salmon, and oysters. White meat also carries some iron, but not nearly as much as lean red meat does. Humans should not rely entirely on red meat for their iron, but it should be considered a significant source. When animal sources of iron are eaten with green leafy vegetables, the body is better able to absorb the heme iron in the animal products, so a balanced, healthy plate of food is recommended.

Non-heme sources include many grains such as wheat and oats, along with lentils, beans, soy, leafy greens like spinach, broccoli, and mustard, and dried fruit. Oatmeal, whole wheat bread, and soy products such as tofu, tempeh, and soymilk are all excellent sources of iron. Many companies also supplement products like cereals and soy milks to increase the amount of iron that they contain.

How long before you can return to work after getting teeth pulled and dentures put in?

By: admin
Published: April 2nd, 2009

My Mom is having teeth pulled and dentures put in. She doesn’t know when she wants to go in to have this done as she won’t have much time off of work. How long approx will it take for her to feel well enough to return to work? Also, I have to get off work to take her in, can they do everything in one appointment or will it take several?

FYI,
different situations are different for all. With extractions today there is no need to wait for a long time.
Usually with immediate dentures most people can return to work in 1-2 days.
If this is a complete mouth extraction, the oral surgeon can do it in one appointment.

How can i get rid of bad breath?

By: admin
Published: April 2nd, 2009

I brush my teeth and i floss after i eat and i definitely dont have any rotton teeth. Yet i still think i have bad breath. My mom says that eating lots of fruit and veggies can also help eliminate bad breath, and to gargle with peroxide. Any other tips??

Get a tongue scaper! THAT is where the smelly germs like to reside! All those people who suggest mouth rinses have never been on the receiving side of someone's affection who nearly DRANK that crap to fight off the nasty breath due to a condition that forced this person to be a mouth-breather!

The smell of Listerine, for example, is not too much more appealing than the stank it is meant to treat! *laughter*

Keep flossing, however. THAT is the BEST thing that you can do to maintain periodontal health.

What teeth whitening product would you recommend?

By: admin
Published: April 2nd, 2009

I will be getting braces off soon and have had them on for a solid 3 years. I really need a very effective teeth whitening product, over the counter. Any ideas? Thanks!

Crest Whitestrips seem to work well, and that brand has the big advantage that the maker is well known and has a serious reputation to protect. Whatever you try, DO NOT fall for any of the "free trial" gimmicks on the Net. In fact, I just would not buy any tooth whitening product that way; there are far more tooth whitening scams and hazardous products on websites than real products, and many of the sellers have very slick come-ons that will suck you in…and then sock your credit card for charges that you had no idea you were agreeing to.
