why would you want to do that?

I think your best bet would be to contact the journal it was published in first. Or you could contact the university/ research center if it is listed anywhere in the article.

Hopefully you would eventually get an email that would allow you to correspond.

Teeth Whitening Overview

By: admin
Published: April 11th, 2009

In this day and age, both men and women alike are searching for the next best product that will dramatically whiten their teeth in as little time as possible. The teeth whitening industry is a multi million dollar business that continually updates and adds new products and technology to their ever-expanding market to give consumers what they want. There are a variety of products to choose from, ranging from in-home treatments to chair side dental procedures. The type you choose will depend on how severe your tooth discoloration is and what factors are behind the discoloration. Additionally, your dentist will work with you to find the best treatment option for your particular case.

Whether you want to go the whitening route at home or visit your dentist for a professional procedure will largely depend upon a number of factors. First and foremost, if you do decide to try bleaching your teeth at home it’s imperative that you follow the directions thoroughly. These kits work best for mild cases of tooth discoloration, or where you only want to lighten a shade or two at most. It’s also important to make sure the product you are using is safe. At the very least, get a few product recommendations from your dentist beforehand.

If you’d rather leave the job to the professionals, you can expect to pay much more than you would for a standard drugstore whitening kit. However, the results you receive from a professional procedure are much greater than you would get from an over the counter product. These types of procedures are recommended for those with extreme tooth discoloration that cannot be remedied with an at-home bleaching kit, but your dentist will evaluate your particular case and determine the treatment options that are best for you.

Whether you choose to use an at-home whitening kit or visit a dentist for a professional procedure, it’s important to do your research thoroughly beforehand. Additionally, figure out what may be the cause of your tooth discoloration and work to eliminate or at least significantly reduce that factor in your daily life. Even if you have significant discoloration, there’s no reason why you can’t fix it with an in-home bleaching kit or a chair side office procedure. Whatever you decide, your dentist will work with you to find the perfect whitening treatment for your specific case, and you can finally have that picture perfect smile you’ve always wanted.

How come a dentist is not considered to be a doctor?

By: admin
Published: April 10th, 2009

Most people tell me that a dentist is not considered a doctor. How come?

They are, in the sense that the DDS is a doctor of dental surgery, and they are called doctor too.

Generally, you say 'dentist' because that's their job. You could also say a medical doctor is an internist or a cardiologist or a neurologist. I guess it would seem odd to say that a dentist was a 'doctor' as a generic term because that wouldn't imply that s/he was a dentist to most people.

Some dentists also go to medical school for things like orofaciomaxillary surgery and they are definitely doctors and dentists both. *g*

Early Childhood Caries, What are the Causes?

Early Childhood Caries, What is the cause?

Typically this shows up as holes on the upper front teeth, and as holes between the lower back teeth.
1. Usually sweet drinks. especially common are fruit juices because people are fooled into thinking that it is natural and therefore better, and that they have "no added sugar". You'd be hard pressed to get any more sugar in! Also includes soft drinks, cordials, chewable Vit C tablets, and of course lollies. Your child will survive quite happily with plain tap water.
Going to bed with sweet drinks is particularly troublesome.
2. Hygiene - kids can't really brush effectively until at least 7 years old. Whilst it's good to let them try, an adult should finish the job.
3. Frequency - the more often kids have sweet foods, then the more often the plaque will attack the teeth. If children want to snack during the day, give them either vegetables like carrots, or real fruit like apples.
Oh, and watch out for grandparents who like to spoil kids with sweet foods or drinks. If they are looking after your kids regularly, then they need to be advised what is best. Unless, of course, they want to pay for the dental bills!

Will metal in partial plate dentures set off metal detectors at airports?

This is a dumb question. But will the metal used to make a partial denture set off the metal detector at at an airport? I have heard of underwire bras doing that so it made me curious about the dentures?

I have two partials, and have never had a problem going through security. Watches are apparently no longer a problem either. What really trips the alarm is metal in shoes & boots, like steel toes or soles.

Does bad breath come from your tongue or between teeth below the gumline?

By: admin
Published: April 10th, 2009

I saw an ad that says bad breath is from the tongue, but whenever I floss it smells bad so why isnt it from between the teeth?

Because the bacteria responsible for producing the sulfur compounds breed best in low-oxygen environments, they tend to gather at the back of the tongue. Plaque, that white sticky substance that you can see in the mirror stuck to the back of your tongue that you just can’t seem to brush away—helps shield the bacteria against oxygen and permits them to breed faster and cause more severe bad breath.

Bad breath products such as toothpastes that are designed to eliminate plaque are highly recommended but it may be possible that they will prove ineffective if the problem has existed for quite some time. In cases of severe plaque at the back of the tongue, it will be necessary to see your dentist in order to fully treat bad breath. The dentist will perform a very uncomfortable but necessary procedure known as a tongue scraping.

Once the layer is removed from the back of the tongue and on any other soft tissue in the mouth, you should no longer have a bad breath problem. So long as you remember to practice good oral hygiene, including brushing the tongue, that should be sufficient enough to prevent bad breath problems from returning.

how does dental caries cause maxillary sinusitis?

By: admin
Published: April 10th, 2009

Dental caries can cause maxillary sinus problems as the nerves and blood vessels from the teeth travel up through/near to where the sinuses of the maxilla are. If caries is left untreated it could potentially get into your blood stream causing general feelings of unwellness. Because your sinuses often flare up with cold/flu type symptoms as part of the bodies self defence system, an area of caries is considered to be a area where a foreign substance is located according to the body, & thus it will try to heal itself.
Believe it or not but the ears, nose, mouth & eyes all interact with each other when you study the body and its systems. Hoping this helps you.
