You Smell Bad

By: admin
Published: December 4th, 2009

Can we talk? There is something I need to tell you, and that is that you smell bad. You smell bad in the morning. You smell bad in the afternoon. You smell bad in the evening. Your breath is a cross between a bad toilet and a garbage can. I am sorry to say, but this is really true.

Maybe you do not notice this. And you are walking around thinking you look nice. You lost a little weight. You have a good haircut finally. Your clothes look nice. You are driving a hip car. Your bank account is full; your house is beautiful. You are thinking to yourself what more could I ask for? Well are you?

But here is the thing. A lot of people and that means A LOT, are thinking none of these things when they think of you. They are thinking you smell bad. Really bad and for you that is really not good, they are not seeing the flash car, they are not seeing the new hair cut or the weight loss, all they see is that person who smells really badly, yes that person is you.

If you are lucky, then they are considering an intervention, maybe. If they are in close quarters with you then they are seriously considering this. But maybe things are worse than that. Maybe they are thinking they do not want to be in close quarters with you anymore. You have to get this: You are very un-kissable. It some cases, you are virtually un-kissable. You are un-huggable. Driving with you in a closed car is no fun either, breathing in the stench and not being able to do anything about it. Sitting next to you in a theater is a chore. That, over the course of a lifetime, can be quite a problem and lets face it if you don do not know it is there, you will not be looking for a solution, will you?

Maybe you do know this. Maybe you are trying to take definitive measures to stem the problem. You are popping mints every time you put out a cigarette, or maybe you take a hit of mouthwash five or six times a day. We need to talk, because the thing is, the mints are not doing any good. They mints do very little to take away the smell of tobacco. In fact the result is even more nauseating, its just Mint-Marlboro, and it is not pleasant.

Also, the smell is not just on your breath. It is on your clothes and it is in your hair, and on your hands and on your skin. So unless you plan on taking a steam bath each time you smoke (with your clothes on) then you are going to smell like this forever. That is depressing.

Do you honestly want to be thought of as a pigpen? Someone who walks around with a cloud, someone that will smell forever? Well do you?

Nutritionists are Bad for You

By: admin
Published: December 3rd, 2009

It all started with eggs.

We weren’t supposed to eat them as they contain cholesterol, the stuff that leads to furring of the arteries and heart problems. Then that piece of advice suddenly disappeared when research suggested that eating foods high in cholesterol doesn’t lead to an increase in that substance in the bloodstream. Instead the blame was laid at the door of saturated (ie animal) fat. Not that there were any clinical trials to prove this. The theory was formulated because of epidemiological evidence, the study of nations, usually non-western, where the incidences of heart disease and bowel cancer are lower.

The food industry embraced the idea warmly, and produced a vast range of foods which were claimed to be low in fat (note how the ’saturated’ bit got lost.) Eat a diet low in fat and you’ll be healthy and slim we were told.

Then a funny thing happened. Lots of people started to get fat. They continue to do so, with childhood obesity being a particular problem.

Meanwhile, on the Atkins diet, a regime high in fat and protein but low in carbohydrate, success was had by some in losing weight. It should have been obvious that this was going to happen, because the nutritionists said it wouldn’t do. Not that Atkins is necessarily the answer. The side effects, such as bad breath, constipation and feeling lousy, are well documented, but its record in shedding the pounds punches holes in the theory that a diet low in fat, moderate in protein and stuffed with carbs is the way to go.

With advances in the analysis of blood it is no longer necessary to wait until someone keels over before the effects of their diet can be assessed, and it’s here that another myth, the one that says cholesterol is bad for you, bites the dust. It now emerges that there are two types. High density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol helps prevent the build up of deposits on artery walls whilst low density lipoprotein (LDL) has the opposite effect. The proportion of HDL to LDL cholesterol is as significant as the overall level in the bloodstream. Has anyone apologised for the previous duff information that was imparted? Like hell.

There’s a quietly emerging school of thought that takes dietary theory away from the idea that protein, fat and carbohydrate should be consumed in specified percentages. Instead we should be eating foodstuffs that have been around as long as humans have. Staples should be meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, nuts and pulses, food that the body is designed to process. There is logic to this theory, but still the establishment continues to pump out the guff that a low fat diet is desirable when evidence doesn,t back this up.

To summarise, the misinformation that’s been bandied about for the last thirty years:

Eggs are bad for you - no they’re not.
Cholesterol is bad for you - not necessarily.
Fat is bad for you - wrong again.

Here’s a better piece of advice: Nutritionists are bad for you.

What is the difference between a dentist and oral surgeon?

By: admin
Published: November 28th, 2009

Here in the U.S. we have seperate oral surgery offices from the regular dentist, but most of the professionals have a DDS degree, so why are they a seperate practice from a dentist?

An oral surgeon goes through dental school to obtain his DDS degree but then takes post graduate residency training for 3 years to specialize in his field. He will end up doing no fillings, cosmetic dentistry, braces, and treating gum disease. He will limit his practice to surgical procedures of the mouth and facial area.

Are dentures purely cosmetic, or do they also serve a real purpose in eating?

My mom is getting a full set of dentures. I worry about her choking without teeth right now. Will the new dentures help her chew food? The set is suppose to be nice. They cost $1800. Thanks for your help!

The main purpose of the dentures is to chew the food properly as is required for proper digestion. Cosmetics is a great bonus of well made teeth. I wish her luck in getting used to them.

How to not let the bad breath interfere in our kissing?

By: admin
Published: November 28th, 2009

Do you know any person who never emits bad breath? I mean, it is very difficult to keep your breath always fresh. But how can we make sure that our kissing needs are not disturbed due to bad breath. I know, oral hygiene is most important, but can you give me some tips how we can keep our breath fresh most of the time.

Kissing is nice…

Oral hygiene is sometimes underrated. Tongue scrapers, flossing and thorough brushing will remove residues of food which gather bacteria (which smell). Mouth wash and sprays are just a temporary solution.

Personally I smoke, i drink coffee and my breath is sort of a devils spawn sometimes. I take a "fishermans friend" before kissing. Try it.

I was at dentist and had a check up and I forgot to ask what I could do for the brown specs on the front teeth, very tiny but ruins my smile in my eyes anyhow. please help. Thanks

For a cavity that is physically there, your only option may be to get it filled. To prevent FUTURE cavities, try using a fluoridated tooth paste (ie crest pro health) and mouth wash. Like I said though, they only prevent future cavities from forming, and unfortunately don’t help with cavities that are pre-existing.

The Psychological Aspects Of Closing The Deal

By: admin
Published: November 27th, 2009

The call to action is the most important part of your presentation. This is where your audience understands exactly what you want them to do. It’s where you define yourself as a persuader instead of a presenter. This conclusion should not come as a shock to your audience. Throughout your presentation, you should have gently led them to the same conclusion that you are now giving them. You should have already prompted them to want to do what you are about to tell them to do.

Some people hate this part of persuasion because they are asking their prospects to do something. This should really be the best part–the action is the only reason you are giving the presentation in the first place; your audience is going to understand that. If you become tense and uneasy, so will your prospect. The whole presentation should be structured to make the call to action smooth and seamless. In fact, the prospect should not even see or feel your call to action coming.

You should prepare your audience for this conclusion before you even start on the rest of the presentation. Your entire presentation should be built around the call to action. I mean, write out the call to action word for word beforehand. From the outset of your message, you must be eager to get to this point. Be positive and enthusiastic. In your preparation, make sure your conclusion is explicit and that the audience is not left on their own to make sense of and understand your message. You need to tell them what to believe; you draw the conclusion for them. Make the call to action easy for them to follow and simple for them to do. There should be no doubt in your prospects’ minds about exactly what you want them to do. Act with authority. You are the expert — demonstrate your expertise. Strive for the teacher/pupil relationship

There is a story of an old man who goes to a dentist because he has a tooth that is killing him. He has been putting it off for months and finally he has to get the tooth taken care of. Once there, the dentist agrees that the tooth needs to come out. The man asks the dentist how much it will cost. The dentist replies that it will be about $250. The old man yelps and yells, “$250 to pull out a tooth?!!” Then he asks how long the procedure will take. He is told it will take about five minutes. “$250 for five minutes of work? That is highway robbery!” the old man protests. The man then asks the dentist how he can live with himself charging people that kind of money. The dentist smiles and says, “If it’s the time you are worried about, I can take as long as you want.”
When planning and preparing your call to action, remember that the process does not have to be long and painful. Be short, brief, and to the point.

Dental Implants - Types

By: admin
Published: November 25th, 2009

There are 5 basic types of dental implants available and the type chosen for a particular patient depends upon a number of factors. The size and condition of the patient’s natural jawbone is probably the main factor and of course no two patients are the same. Some jawbones can be wide and deep and others narrow and shallow with many variations in between.

The most commonly used material used for implants is the inert metal titanium because it has been found to fuse well with live bone tissue in the jawbone. This fusion process is known as ‘osseointegration’. The highly skilled work of inserting implants is carried out by a perodontist or oral surgeon who operates from within a hospital environment or more likely from a private clinic.

Root Form Implants

As the name suggests, root form implants resemble the root of a tooth but are formed like a self-tapping screw which gives it a good surface area for maximum fusion to the living bone. It is inserted by screwing the implant into a hole previously drilled into the jawbone or into the cavity left from an extraction. The implant then acts as a root or foundation for a new prosthetic crown. However, this type of implant can only be used if there is sufficient width and depth to the jawbone. Sometimes it is necessary to graft additional bone to the jawbone before dental implants can be considered.

Plate Form Implants

If there is insufficient live bone structure because the jawbone is too narrow or not deep enough then plate form implants is another option the perodontist will consider. This takes the form of a long narrow strip of titanium which is inserted between the jawbone and the gum and will fuse with the jawbone giving a foundation for a number of new prosthetic crowns if required. Sometimes it may also be necessary to graft additional bone if the jawbone is in a poor condition before the implant can be inserted.

Subperiosteal Implants

Subperiosteal implants are an option used where the condition of the jawbone is such that an insert is not possible and a bone graft is not feasible. The jawbone is exposed and a mould impression taken from which the subperiosteal implant is created and placed on top of the jawbone under the gum and fusion takes place between the jawbone and the subperiosteal implant. Sometimes a CAT scan is taken of the patient’s jaw which then allows the subperiosteal implant to be made without first exposing the jawbone which would otherwise require a two stage surgical operation.

Artificial Bone Substitute

This is a synthetic material which has similar properties to natural bone and will cling to the live jawbone and grow like real bone. This type of implant is usually used as a foundation for dentures.

Endosteal Implants

Endosteal implants are similar to subperiosteal in that they are moulded or shaped to fit in a cavity in the jaw rather than sit on top of the jaw.

This article is intended only to give a very basic outline of the types of dental implants considered by the perodontist or oral surgeon. Sometimes a variation or combination of the types described may be used but it is important that if you are considering this type of dental treatment that you consult your dentist or a perodotist to establish what is the most suitable type of treatment for your unique situation.
